Tourist highway idea receives support from rural Dunedin residents

Rural residents north of Dunedin have given support to the idea of a
tourist route on historic main routes out of the city, Mt Cargill Road
and Coast Road. These routes have for many years been bypassed by
State Highway 1.

Out of 68 respondants, 37 people indicated that they are in favour of
this idea while 16 had reservations but were not opposed. Concerns
raised included road surface conditions, narrow width of the roads and
possible extra traffic.

Supporters were keen that the new route should promote local history
including Plunket founder Sir Truby
King, feature murals and topiary shrubs, have special maps and promote
a slow driving policy.

The 'Your Community, Your Future, Your Vision' survey of local
residents was conducted by the Waikouaiti Coast Community Board of the
Dunedin City Council. Respondants were asked "With a steady increase
in visitor numbers to the ward area, what are your feelings regarding
... promoting Coast Road as a scenic route, with increased
high-profile signage detailing attractions and services in our area?"

Welcome

Welcome to The Other 1

The Other 1 is a road trip itinerary which parallels and avoids State
Highway 1, the main north-south highway of New Zealand.

Highway 1 is mostly two-lane but average speeds are high, so this
itinerary aims to create a slower-speed touring route serving the main
destinations. In many cases the route given here is the old highway,
so the itinerary is like Route 66. The recommended route is no more
than 5 or so km to one or other side of the highway and does not use
any gravelled roads. The intention is to create a route ideal for
campervans and people admiring the view (and get these slowpokes off
the main highway!).
